| Pearl
jewelry is available in a wide variety of prices and
styles. Fiebig Jewelers carries everything form
pearl tie tacs for guys to pearl earrings, rings, pendants
and strands for the ladies. Perhaps the greatest confusion
concerns the nature of "real" pearls.

There
basically are three categories of pearls.
1. Simulated pearls. These can be any shape and
are manufactured in a wide variety of colors, qualities
and size. All of these are created completely in the
lab with no use of shellfish or nature. Consequently,
these are the least expensive.

2. Cultured pearls can also occur in a wide variety
of sizes, shapes, and colors. These pearls begin with
a nucleus shaped by man in the lab and then implanted
in one of several species of shellfish for a period
of years in the sea or with freshwater pearls, in lakes
and streams. Most fine jewelry pearls are cultured and
we carry everything from tiny freshwater pearls to gumball
size South Sea pearls, including the hottest looks today
with natural Black Tahitian pearls.
3. Natural pearls. These pearls also come in
a variety of shapes and sizes, mostly small and off
round. They occur completely without man's intervention
as a result of an irritant entering the mollusk. These
are extremely rare. For example: a 6mm round perfect
cultured pearl would sell for about $35-$40. A natural
pearl, same size and quality about $800.00. The only
way to identify natural from cultured is x-ray to determine
the exact nature of the nucleus. |
